When your child has mastered day time potty training, it's time to take it to the next level - potty training him to last through the night.
There is a big difference between daytime and night time toilet training. While it's easy for your child to control his bladder during the day, at night, things aren't so much in his conscious control.

Night time potty training might take your child longer to learn, but this is natural. As usual, you need to be patient - don't berate him for not getting it right from the first night. This may make him averse to going to the the whole process (similar to day time training).
To speed up the process, make sure that your child has been successfully potty trained at daytime before moving on. This is quite logical - if your child isn't getting it right when he's awake - you have no chance in expecting him to control his bladder when he's deeply into sleep land.
Here are some quick tips to follow once you start potty training at night:
1. Make a trip to the toilet before he goes to bed.
The incidence of bed wetting at night would be lesser, because your child has emptied his bladder just before.
2. Try to limit your child's water (or any liquid) intake for at least an hour before his bedtime.
This will again, reduce the chances of him having a full bladder during the night.
3. Let your child sleep with a night light on.
Provide your child with a night light, so he can find his way in the dark. Children are naturally afraid of the dark, so they might refrain from getting up to go to the toilet as a result. A night light would help reduce your child's fears.
4. Wake your child up whenever you have to go to the toilet at night.
Your child might initially be resistant to it, but if he sees this as a daily routine, he will easily get used to the idea of going to the potty in the middle of the night.
A word of caution - use your judgment - if you've just put him to bed at 8pm, don't wake him up to go again at 10pm. There's a fine line between good potty practices and disturbing your little one's healthy sleep.
A friend of mine also wakes her son up to take him to the loo, just before she goes to bed - usually about 12am - 1am.
5. Use pull-ups, training pants and or a waterproof sheet.
Since your child cannot control his bladder as yet, protect him (and your mattress) from accidental leaks by using protective materials.
6. Encourage and praise your child.
Nighttime potty training takes longer, and may even take you months. This is because you're no longer relying on your kid's conscious mind tot let you know he needs to 'go'. Kid's don't have the built in trigger that wakes adults up when they need to pee - so accidents WILL happen.
But never, ever reprimand your child. Instead, words of encouragement will motivate him. Explain to your child why it's important to go to the potty at night again. And don't forget to make a big fuss about him going through the night without wetting his bed!
The key to successful nighttime potty training is patience. Follow the tips outlined above and soon you will start to notice changes. Remember that children learn at their own pace - which you should have a feel for by now.
But if your child has not been able to control his bladder after you've followed all tips for a while, it's time to visit your physician. There may be an underlying problem that you may need to address to help your training becomes effective. I discuss a few possible problems to consider at GetPottyTrained.com
